Health
insurance can provide numerous plans to suit your healthcare needs. By
reading below you will be able to learn more about the different policies
and what they have to offer.
Types of Policies
Each of the plans below differs in medical
treatment procedures, coverage, and payment options.
Indemnity
(fee-for-fee): The indemnity option allows you to go to the doctor
or hospital of your choice. If you submit a claim, you will then pay the
invoice, in which you will be reimbursed later. If you like, you can arrange
for the doctor or hospital to collect their fees directly from your
insurance company. Indemnity plans are very flexible in who provides your
care.
PPO
(Preferred Provider Organization): With a Preferred Provider
Organization, the insurance company has a set network of care providers
(doctors and hospitals). In order to be a part of this network, the care
providers discount their fees for service. The PPO plan is usually cheaper
than the indemnity plan.
HMO
(Health Maintenance Organization): With a Health Maintenance
Organization, all of your medical services will be provided by a specific
organization of doctors and hospitals. In order to receive service, you must
use the providers authorized by your insurance company. There is an annual
maximum "out-of-pocket" expense, and HMO's do not charge deductibles and
usually require only a small amount for the co-payment.
POS
(Point-of-Service): Point-of-Service options provide HMO's with
greater flexibility. This means that your primary caretaker can refer you to
someone outside the organization at little or no cost.
Common Health
Insurance Options
After selecting one of the plans above and establishing its terms,
you will be given a proposal containing six different areas.
Doctor
Co-Pay: With a doctor co-pay, a small fee will be paid to the
insurance company (usually $10-$40) for each visit to a healthcare provider.
Prescription
Card: With a prescription card most of your costs for prescription
medicines will be paid by your insurance company. With this option, you will
only have to pay a fraction of the costs that are associated with
prescription medicines.
Accident
Supplement (AS): With the accident supplement, if you are in an
accident, all costs for any medical treatments will be covered up to a
specified amount without having to pay a deductible. If any costs exceed the
specified amount, your deductibles and co-pay amounts will apply as normal.
Preventive
Care: With the preventive care option, immunizations, physicals,
and tests may be covered without having to pay a deductible. Preventive care
may be offered as either an option or policy inclusion.
Vision:
Your insurance carrier may offer benefits that cover your visual
needs. Specific examples include discounted eyewear and co-payment options.
Dental:
Your insurance carrier may offer benefits that cover your dental
needs. Such things as dental cleanings, examinations, and other dental care
may be provided.
